Hi,
I am a 4th year pathology resident (as of July 1st) and just completed the Match for Forensics in May 2024. I will be starting fellowship in 2025 after the completion of my fourth year of residency.
The timeline to apply is for two years in advance, so if you begin applying in mid/late 2024 it will be to start fellowship in summer 2026. Yes, this also means the application process took the better part of a year as the Match does not occur until the spring following the start of applications.
There was no solid timeline given by any program during the year I applied (2023 submission for Match that occurred in spring 2024) so I decided to choose a handful of programs and look at their respective websites. I then decided to just submit all of my application materials in September 2023 (similar to when residency applications are due).
I received interviews from November through March as they were accepted and scheduled on a rolling basis and each program had their own timeline of when they decided to conduct interviews. I would surmise that this was based on the number of applications they received and that they did not want to cut off accepting applications with too early of a deadline.
There is only one 'Match day' when you find out both if you match and where (unlike residency match where there are separate days for if and where). There is also a fee for participation in NRMP fellowship match just as there was with residency match- you must register and then submit your rank list within their Match timeline. I do not believe there is a SOAP process, but not all spots have been filled for either of the first two years of the Forensics Match. Because of this, it seems plausible that if you did not match, you could contact any of the unfilled programs and attempt to obtain a spot.
I hope this helps somewhat. Please feel free to reply and I can try to answer any other questions. Best of luck!

These are from my co-residents interested in Forensics:
1.) Could you discuss the timeline for applying for fellowship, when should you get interview offers, what time do you rank programs, acceptance for fellowship, and the relationship to when you would start fellowship?
It would be helpful if they gave a timeline for future years also. For example, if you are planning on starting fellowship in July 2025, you should start applying at this time?
2.) Is there an alternative option like SOAP if you do not match?

Will interviews be streamlined to a specific date range with the match?

Hey everyone!
Representative fellowship leaders from the fields of Forensics, Hematopathology, Bone and Soft Tissue, and Molecular Genetic Pathology (folks from Yale, MSK, and other institutions) are going to soon publish a pre-recorded webinar through ASCP communities regarding the Fellowship Match. This webinar is meant to explain the details of the Fellowship Match process and answer any questions you may have ahead of time.
That being said, please feel free to post to this thread with any questions you wish to have answered during the session. I will ask these questions during the session. Example questions include - what are important deadlines to know about, what application materials are required, etc.
The deadline to submit questions is Thursday, July 11th, at 11:59 pm.
Thanks!
Savanah
