  • 1.  Seeking Advice on Obtaining CLS License After Training Facility Status Loss

    Posted 10-31-2024 03:18

    Hi everyone,

I've been working in a CLIA-certified lab for 5 years. My workplace was also a CLS training facility, and I used my work experience (as a CLS trainee) and previous education to obtain my Technologist in Chemistry certificate from ASCP-BOC. However, my lab lost its CLS training facility status, so I couldn't use my certificate to get a CLS license. Many of my colleagues also have a similar situation.

My colleague and I have been waiting for over 5 years, hearing that my lab is in the process of regaining the CLS training facility status, but it hasn't happened yet. Now, we might not be able to continue our lab work because we don't have CLS licenses. This situation feels incredibly unfair, as we expected to get the license based on our work.

Is there any way to get a CLS license based on my situation? What can we do to protect ourselves in this kind of situation?

Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Hello Lifan,

You already have the license from ASCP. You can apply to companies using your credentials. There are many labs and pharmaceutical companies that hire MLS'. Labcorp will hire candidates with your credentials.

    Hello Lifan,

See my comments in the NorCal thread. Just a note that some States require an additional license, for example CA, HI, NY etc. Sometimes it's a rubber stamp and sometimes there is work involved to get it. Some institutions only require a certificate like ASCP no matter what State, for example the military labs and Veteran Affairs.

CA LFS (lab field service) can evaluate your specific situation and let you know what you need to get your CLS-generalist or limited licenses. They are very helpful.

    Good Luck,

    Sean.
