Once the package is opened or sterility is compromised, the syringe must be used immediately and discarded. Saying that, the "30-minute rule" sometimes applies to compounded sterile preparations (IV medications, certain multidose vials without preservative), but it does not apply to syringes. I would say that unwrapped syringes are not suitable for blood draws if that is the way they are purchased you should not use them. Non sterile syringes can be contaminated with bacteria and can affect results.

I work at a clinic and rural facility which purchased unwrapped syringes for blood draws. I was taught that once a syringe is opened that the time limit was thirty minutes. Would appreciate feedback.
