    Hi Tommie,

Many MLT programs have a 1+1 model.  The core curriculum must be completed prior to entering the second, or professional, part of the program.  Students may take several years to complete their core courses but, once in the professional year, it is full time, usually for 3 semesters.

I know Austin Community College, Flathead Valley Community College and Seward Community College are just a few that follow this model.

I believe you have to have a Bachelors in a science (with a certain number of hours in Bio and Chem) in order to sit for MLS with your MLT degree and certification. Double check eligiblity requirements on ASCP.org. Thomas University has a Biomedical Laboratory Science degree for students who want to get the MLS education but without the clincial coursework or for those students who maybe attended a non NAACLS accredited MLT program, so that they can still be eligible to sit for BOC with a qualified clinical lab education.

There is now an alternate path for MLTs to qualify for a Technologist's license in NY, however, they must complete a BS degree and pass the ASCP BOC exam for Technologists.

    State of California:
Laboratory Field Services (LFS) requires applicants to submit documentation of academic coursework, clinical training, and work experience to qualify for licensure.

Work experience in California as an unlicensed laboratory staff person will not be accepted as qualification toward any clinical laboratory license. Please note that biotech/pharmaceutical, forensic, academic, veterinary, research, and student laboratory experience cannot count as work experience or training for any clinical license.

    Transcripts:
Laboratory Field Services Personnel Licensing Section requires you to provide your official transcript from an accredited institution in order to review and determine your education and course qualifications.

All non-U.S. transcripts must be evaluated by an LFS approved evaluation service to determine if your education is equivalent to an accredited college or university education in the U.S. LFS will accept educational transcript evaluations by "Current Members" of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), and "Endorsed Members" of the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE) if completed on or after August 15, 2016. Evaluations completed before August 15, 2016 will only be accepted if completed by AACRAO. The evaluation service will send an evaluation of your educational institution and academic courses directly to LFS. Official transcript from the university is required in addition to the evaluation.
