Texas is experiencing its largest measles outbreak in 30 years and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence Service is providing support there. Here is an overview on testing, disease presentation, and vaccination, as well as commentary on the public health impact of vaccine hesitancy, and the unintended consequences of the immunization program's success.

    Our thanks to

Professor Rhode, thank you for sharing such critical information with us as my hometown El Paso, Texas, was affected by this 2025 West Texas measles outbreak. We had 59 confirmed cases which accounted for 7.7% of the West Texas outbreak. This outbreak was confirmed over by our state health department as of August 18, 2025. Many of our community members lacked education about the outbreak, especially regarding how highly contagious measles is, the serious risks it poses, and the critical importance of vaccination. To address this, our City Public Health Department has created a dedicated measles information page, offering resources and details about vaccination clinics to help protect residents now and in the future.
