Considering the severe shortages of qualified board-certified medical laboratory professionals- and that our MLS students are offered various positions even prior to graduation- it is perplexing why lack of experience would be a deciding factor at most facilities.
As another colleague mentioned - perhaps the determining factor is the particular laboratory drpt or shift which you are interested in.
Also - you mention licensure- which is state mandated Right to Practice Profession and unfortunately few states deem status to Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technicians.
Certification is national professional recognition and mandated by states with licensure requirements.
If you lack of experience due to time lapse is an issue for all the facilities you applied to- perhaps taking a lab assistant or accessioning clerk or phlebotomist position to become employed and get a foot in the door would be a channel to employment as a medical laboratory professional.
Also realize HR are very restricted in hiring so networking with supervisors and laboratory administration directly is a more resourceful collaboration.
Definitely Healthcare needs qualified board-certified medical laboratory professionals for patient care.
Best to you.

Hi Maria,
It's interesting that you're having that issue. I would ordinarily suggest adding a certification if time and funds permit, but you already seem very well-educated. It might just be a case of needing to apply more widely or for a different shift (third shift usually has openings as techs move up for second and first shift as soon as openings are available).

Hello, I have been out of practice for a long time. My licenses are up to date. But I can't get a job because I don't have recent experience.
How can I do this I will work for free for a while if necessary.
Any suggestions?
Thank you for your help
