    Posted 25 days ago
Does anyone have information or can give insight on how to prepare for the exam? I have been in the field about 15 years and took the exam and didn't pass. ASCP provides study guides, but frankly speaking the literature is very outdated. The questions on the test are related to the first generation of cytometers used and things that aren't any longer used. Is there a study test exam available? I have tried to look and honestly can't find it. Based on my report from the exam my defiencies were in this area of instrumentation. I would like to take it again but honestly, I am doubtful if I will pass and the exam price now is so much more than when I took it.
Anyone has any ideas, suggestions, insights, recommendations anything, please!

I sympathize with you on the unsuccessful test you had.

A tool that will be helpful is LabCE.

    It mimics ASCP exam.
    I hope this helps.

I've been working on a supplemental study guide. It's still a work in progress, but you may find it useful. Any feedback will be appreciated

The Flow Cytometry Specialist certification (SCYM) is challenging due to the fact it is trying to provide a certification pathway to both clinical and research individuals.  As a Specialist level certification it is not an entry level exam and requires a minimum of 3 years flow experience.  For this reason the content outline is extremely important to serve as a study guide.  As a member of the examination committee I can assure you the questions are not related to first generation instruments or things no longer used.  All questions are reviewed every year as we work to keep the exam relevant to current practice in either clinical or research applications.

    To examination review board

It appears that the board review of the Cytometry Specialist Exam material is not up to date and the exam questions may need to be reviewed and updated. Based on current testing review from actual test takers I would suggest a high level review of the material.

The ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) Specialist in Cytometry (SCYM) examination is carefully developed and reviewed by the Cytometry Examination Committee, a team of experienced clinical and research cytometrists from across the United States who are currently working in the field. These subject matter experts meet annually to review the SCYM Examination Content Guideline and SCYM Reading List to ensure these are appropriate study materials, covering both clinical and research flow cytometry, for examination preparation. They also review and evaluate the examination questions to ensure accuracy, relevance to current practice, and acceptable statistical performance. The committee has thoroughly reviewed all examination questions and confirmed that they are accurate and based on current laboratory practice and instrumentation. We appreciate your feedback and will share it with the committee for consideration.

    Sincerely,

    ASCP BOC Team
