    Greetings family,

Thank you Dr. Rohde for sharing this link.

Ok family! What are we doing about this shortage? The lab director came to me yesterday asking how was blood cultures done in the past without blood culture bottles? I am now tasked with getting an answer so I pose it you my fellow laboratorians here and aboard.

Here's my suggestions let me know your thoughts.

Suggestion 1: use TSB broth to culture 2 to 5 ml of blood for a 5-day period. We then observe the tubes for turbidity everyday. We subculture any tubes that appear to have turbidity or cloudiness. We culture the specimen on day four regardless to turbidity results to ensure there is no growth.

Suggestion 2: (Now this might be a stretch but I'm gonna say it anyway) partner with cepheid to create two test cartridges that can be added to the gene expert machine. One cartridge for gram positive and another for gram-negative using the 16s RNA sequence for gram positive and gram-negative organisms. If it turns out positive for the presence of 16sRNA for bacterial growth then we subculture the blood for isolation and sensitivity.  This would require Cepheid being onboard with creating this new test kit.

Thoughts, arguments, suggestions, let's open this to discussion. Please let me know how your lab is looking to resolve for the shortage in blood culture bottles.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Banks
