Attracting students to MLS careers

Concerned with the declining laboratory workforce, I'd like to empower high school/community college students with knowledge of the tremendous potential of an MLS career. My goal is to create awareness and stir interest among these students as they deliberate their career paths. Does anyone have experience getting into the schools to share your wisdom and represent the field? Do you have a template (script or ppt) when presenting to students or their counselors?

Thanks in advance for your success stories.

I've found that it's easiest to approach school counselors and HOSA teachers to schedule a visit. I often participate in career fairs and science- and STEM-themed days that the schools host as well. I have a general PowerPoint that I can email if you'd like. Otherwise, I bring a few things to wow them, such as a Clinitest demo with apple juice, an adult Ascaris, and fake micro plates.

    Hi everyone,

I regard to community college students, there are many great MLT programs housed within them. I think it would be advantageous to partner with local MLT programs and create bridge opportunities so their graduates can continue their education and earn their MLS degree. We have done this with both in-person and online bridge programs, and it works well!

    Hello Donna,
We have an experience in the university before the freshman students choose their study fields. Of course, use of extensive presentations, approaches and methods. For high school it's highly recommended to practice as lab professional and internship at clinical laboratory area.

We have our Admissions Dept help us get in the door to local high schools and community colleges. They often run college fairs or career days. Sometimes we talk specifically about lab, and sometimes the presentations are combined with the other programs at our university. Another option is HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). We recently presented at a statewide meeting of over 600 students! I have attached our ppt deck for our information sessions describing our 2 programs and the university.

Donna, the ASCP has opportunities, tools and resources for members to advocate for the profession.  Check out this website for "Career Ambassadors" who want to make presentations to students about careers in laboratory sciences.

    Donna-

Several years ago, I attended the NYS School Counselors Association meeting as an exhibitor. MO has one as well Missouri School Counselor Association (moschoolcounselor.org)

I was surprised that not one counselor was aware of lab sciences as a career and through a sign-up sheet at my table I have been able to build a mailing list of counselors throughout the state.  As a result of these connections, we have been invited to a number of career days for middle and high school students.

What I think is even more useful is to invite the counselors (and science trachers) to come and tour your lab. That first hand experience will really make an impression and give them a better understanding of the type of work we do as well as the importance of our careers and the opporuntities for their students.

    Lots of luck!

    Hi Donna and others,

I'd like to mention ASCP's Ambassador program to this group, which is all about reaching people on the precipice of making a decision about their future career and bringing awareness and visibility of the laboratory to their communities.

Ambassadors have their own Community in this platform, similar to this Laboratory Professionals Member Community, so they may interact and share ideas--plus, that is where resources will be shared that Ambassadors can easily turnaround for presentation to the various student and community groups with whom you're passionate about connecting.

Learn more Ambassadors, their role, and how they make a difference here: Ambassadors (ascp.org)

If this sounds like something you would like to become involved with, become a Career Ambassador by emailing membership@ascp.org.
There are many resources for you to use with students, guidance counselors, and teachers on What's My Next | Learn About Career Opportunities in the Medical Laboratory (whatsmynext.org), including descriptions of roles in the laboratory, necessary education, and salaries.

Thank you for everything you're doing to bring awareness to the laboratory!

    Hello Natalie Sherry,

I greatly appreciate the valuable information regarding ASCP's Ambassador Program. My consultancy company and I are dedicated to raising awareness about the significance of certification and membership with ASCP, specifically in Ethiopia and throughout Africa. As a result, we have successfully reached out to approximately 12 countries, providing consultancy services and assisting individuals in their journey to become certified members of ASCP. The demand for our services continues to grow.

We have actively participated in various events to promote awareness in Ethiopia, and I invite you to watch the video (linked below) to get an overview of our accomplishments thus far. It is my firm belief that individuals worldwide should strive to emphasize the importance of ASCP membership to professionals in their respective fields. I can personally attest to the positive impact ASCP certification has had on my career advancement and confidence in my knowledge, both before and after obtaining the certification.

    Yours sincerely,

Thanks to all for your prompt and helpful replies! After decades of specializing in cell therapy, I needed to broaden my perspective if am to get involved with recruiting into the lab sciences. Your suggestions (HOSA, School Counselor Associations, Community College MLT Programs, career & STEM days, and ASCP resources) provided valuable tips to me get started. Thanks to those who sent/offered ppt presentations. And congrats to Giorgis on your successful awareness events in Ethiopia!

I'll keep you posted on progress!

Good day all from Cape Town..Just completed my participation in ASLM 2023 here. Great conference with over 1538 registrants from across Africa as well as other parts of the world.

I was chatting with Christina Mwangi who is wrapping up her career with CDC Uganda but taking on a new role of attracting more students to the world of laboratory medicine. I have been a long time ASCP member..since 1983. For the past 34 years, I have taken what I learned in the microbiology lab as well as in infection control and biosafety and parlayed that into working in >60 countries, most recently with labs in 11 countries in collaboration with CDC and ASLM..

Giorgis...I have been to Ethiopia several times now working most recently with EPHI on viral load waste management.

It would be great to network with Christina on this effort.

    Kind regards,

    Dear Edward Krisiunas

I deeply appreciate your kind message, which serves as a great source of motivation for me to work diligently and make meaningful contributions to the future. It brings me immense joy to learn that you have had experience in Ethiopia, particularly at EPHI, the esteemed research institution there. I would be delighted if you could connect me with Christina Mwangi, as I have been collaborating with various Clinical Laboratory Professionals and institutions in Africa, particularly in the field of Anatomic Pathology techniques and ASCP BOC certification. I am eager to establish contact with Christina Mwangi to facilitate further communication and exchange of experiences. Once again, thank you wholeheartedly for your support!
